Intern at Marriott

Springboard Your Career
 with a Business Internship!

The College of Business, Computing & Government (CBCG) is designed to provide career development experiences to students in Accounting, Finance, Hospitality & Tourism Management and International Business Management.

Participation in an internship allows you to combine on-the-job career learning with related academic course work to give you that total educational experience.  Employment goals can also be achieved as many interns are offered fulltime employment by their employers upon graduation.

Steps for a Successful Internship

Intern at Black n Decker

1.  Do I Qualify?

2.  Get Approval to Search

3.  Find an Internship Provider

4.  Complete the Online Registration

5.  Register Internship Objectives

6.  Arrange Travel & Living Accommodations

7.  Do Requirements During the Internship

8.  Do Requirements After the Internship

1. Do I Qualify?

  • Basic qualifications include: Current BYU-H student, 2.5 GPA (3.0 GPA for some providers), preferably a Junior or Senior, and basic prerequisite courses and skills needed to complete the internship.
  • When you meet with the Career Center Experiential Learning Advisor in "Get Approval to Search" below, he/she will confirm your academic qualification and help you schedule your MAP.

2. Get Approval to Search from the Career Center

  • Complete the Initial Internship Approval Form available here or at the Career Center (next to the Cafeteria) and present it to the Experiential Learning Advisor at the Career Center.
  • Complete your student CAP requirements by taking the one hour workshops on resumes', interview skills, and Y-Careers (the BYUH job search database).
  • Get clearance from the International Student Advisor (if you are an International Student).
  • With the Initial Internship Approval, you may begin searching for your internship!

3. Find an Internship Provider

  • Internships are for a minimum of 2 credits and a maximum of 6 credits. Your internship must last for at least six weeks and work a minimum of 60 hours per credit. Typical internships are 3 credit hours for T1, T2 or T3, and 6 credit hours for Fall Semester or Winter Semester (There is a maximum of six (6) total credits for ALL internships combined, including multiple internships.)
  • Search on Y-Careers , company websites under "careers" and among your friends and relatives for where you would like to go or with which companies you would like to work.
  • Existing BYUH registered providers are available from the Y-Careers database. Or, you may supply your own provider and have them register as a BYUH provider through Y-Career.
  • Preferably you will select a provider that you want to work for after graduation. Most students either find a provider close to family where they can live while on their internship, or they find a provider that will provide housing or enough income to pay for housing. (See scholarships below under Travel & Living Accommodations.)

4. Complete the Online Registration on Y-Careers

  • Once you have a formal offer letter from an Internship Provider, complete the Online Registration Form on Y-Careers.
  • Completing the Online Registration Form will trigger the automated registration clearance process with the various offices and departments on campus (Your Internship Coordinator, Insurance, Visa, Business Office, Housing, Registrar, Dean, PCC, I-WORK, etc.).
  • They may contact you directly via email for an appointment before they will grant clearance. Be prepared that the Business Office and the Career Center both will require an appointment before granting clearance.

5. Register Internship Objectives with the CBCG Internship Coordinator

6. Arrange Travel & Living Accommodations

  • Confirm travel arrangements and living accommodations through the Career Center .
  • They will help you determine if you qualify for travel and other scholarships for your internship.

7. Do Requirements During Internship

  • Review your Evaluation of Objectives Form with your supervisor within your first week of employment. Email or fax a signed copy to the Internship Coordinator to confirm that the objectives have been reviewed. (CBCG FAX 808-675-3582.)
  • Keep a daily personal journal. Email, weekly, a summary of your daily journal entries to the CBCG Internship Coordinator at: businessinternships@byuh.edu.
  • Work a minimum of six weeks and 60 hours per credit hour.
  • Work hard and complete your objectives. Have an awesome experience!

8. Do Requirements After Internship

  • Complete the final signatures and evaluation on the Evaluation of Objectives Form in an exit interview with your supervisor and bring it to the Internship Coordinator when you return to BYU-H.
  • Have your supervisor complete the Employer Internship Evaluation and email it to businessinternships@byuh.edu.
  • Return to BYU-H safely.
  • Complete the online Student Internship Evaluation at Y-Careers.
  • Make sure your daily journal is up to date.
  • Complete an Internship Report of approximately 2 pages, double spaced, for each credit hour. (See the CBGC Internship Handbook for Internship Report requirements.)
  • Schedule an appointment with the Internship Coordinator to review all of the above FORMS and your Internship Report to receive credits earned. (Must be scheduled within 10 days of your return.)
